2008 Overall Winner :: Peter Stutchbury Architecture :: Outcrop House
The entry process and categories have been overhauled; there are now only 4 Primary categories, all building related, with the other traditional categories, Interior Fitout and Outdoor Timber, now catered for in the Special section. The previously much sought after, Environmental Commitment Award, has been realigned as Sustainable Design to allow the focus on new timber as a part of the solution rather than the continued reliance of recycled material simply fitting the criterion. Another new category in the Special range sees the introduction of Best Use of Australian Certified Timber which also provides an opportunity to showcase the efforts of the designers and builders working with our environmentally friendly material. Entry into the competition has also undergone a major change it will be all electronic, with photos, drawings, sketches and information briefs to be supplied on a USB memory stick which will be provided as part of the entry process. There will be no display board, therefore no costly artwork or panel to make and no problem of getting it to Sydney for judging, undamaged. Instead of just one Awards Presentation function in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, this year there will be 4 Regional functions including Perth, all to take place in late October. All entries will be eligible for their specific Region Awards and then all winners will progress to the National finals which will be announced by the media in November. The overall Australian Timber Design Award winner will receive a 2 page editorial feature in a leading national architectural magazine. The competition is open to most sectors of the industry including architects, building designers, builders, engineers, in fact anyone who has a principal interest in the design and construction of a building that heavily features timber, either structurally or aesthetically, and they can validate their claim.
