The TDA is leading a consortium of associations from the timber industry and allied sectors to develop a Code of Conduct to verify legality of harvest of wood-based products.
Stephen Mitchell, the TDA’s sustainability program manager, is leading this project. Stephen says that "For a number of years different industry sectors have worked to maximise the certainty that timber and wood-based products are sourced from legally harvesting forests and plantations. While legality of forest harvesting and importation of wood-based products are complex issues, substantial progress has already been made in addressing and reducing the potential risks." The project is intended to support the Federal Government’s policy of ensuring that wood products are only obtained from legally verified forestry activities. It is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. An initial, independently facilitated industry forum will be held in Sydney 22 July. Invitations to the forum will be sent to member companies by industry associations participating in the project, or by the TDA. Companies wanting to participate should contact the TDA or their relevant industry association. Associations participating in the project are: Australian Timber Importers Federation (ATIF), Australian Plantation Products and Paper Industry Council (A3P), Australian Window Association (AWA), Australian Wood Panels Association (AWPA), Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), Furniture Industry Association of Australia (FIAA), National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI), Queensland Timber Importers, Exporters and Wholesalers Association (QTIEWA), Window and Door Industry Council (WADIC), and Timber Development Association (TDA). |
