The November launch, attended by architects, building designers, local timber supplies as well as the members of Cypress NSW where treated to a very different approach to the use of White Cypress and where very pleased to see the results obtained. TDA had commissioned Victorian architect, Peter Woolard, to give a presentation on his latest entries to the Australian Timber Design Awards, which had both heavily featured White Cypress. Peter, the winner of the 2007 Award for Best Use of Cypress, showed that project, The Armytage, and his 2008 entry, the Beach House, which 10 days following the presentation went on to win 2 major awards, including Best Use of Cypress, and taking him into the group of 4 finalists for the main 2008 Design Award. Both projects presented by Peter extensively used White Cypress firstly because of its natural durability and termite resistance and also its unique aesthetic qualities. Peter explained how using the natural qualities and beauty of cypress could provide spectacular results particularly in harsh seaside locations such as Lorne in Victoria where both projects where located. Peter also indicated that the secret to his cypress success was the supply chain and then introduced his local timber merchant Gary Frencham, from Frencham Cypress. Gary then took the lead and explained how he worked with Peter, and all his customers, to provide the right product for each individual project and went on to talk about the importance of coating and detailing prior to installation to ensure long term customer satisfaction. The intention from Cypress NSW is to undertake a series of short design seminars, including both Peter and Gary where possible, in Western Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra during May/June, with venues and dates currently being organised.
