A significant milestone in the development of the program since its inception in early 2008, was a very extensive market research survey. Also significant was the launch of the branding image, a logo developed by members of the Cypress NSW producers’ alliance. The program’s primary focus was the repositioning of the two major product ranges of NSW saw-millers: tongue and groove flooring, and structural framing. The aim was to turn these into the products of choice for builders, designers and consumers seeking sustainable, quality assured, locally manufactured timber products. The Cypress NSW logo, introduced by the alliance in 2006, provides consumers a dual guarantee. First, that the products supplied under its banner are sourced from AFS certified timber (supplied from the resources of Forests NSW – the government agency that manages the State Forests of NSW). Second, that these products are manufactured under the strict guidelines laid down by the ATIC quality assurance program, voluntarily implemented by the NSW saw-millers. The Specifiers and Consumers' guide, titled “A Guide to the Selection and Use of Australian Cypress Timber”, is the second of two main publications of the program. It is available either as a printed brochure or as a PDF, downloadable from www.cypressnsw.com. Developed primarily to give users an understanding of Australian White Cypress (Callitris glaucophylla), this guide provides good colour photos of the timber and a table of properties which will allow specifiers and consumers to match cypress products to their visual or structural requirements. The other major program publication, launched in September 2009, is titled “Selection, Installation and Finishing of Cypress Tongue and Groove Natural Timber Flooring”. This contains the most up to date information on mechanical (staples, nails and cleats) and adhesive fixing requirements. These details have not, as yet, been included in other industry manuals or standards; they are based on industry best practice and on research conducted across the timber industry. This publication also provides all information necessary for fixing over concrete slabs, plywood and existing strip flooring. It serves, moreover, as a guide to floor finishes recommended for use with Cypress. Comprehensive and wide-ranging, this document aims to be the definitive industry best practice manual for Cypress. It is available for download from the Cypress NSW web site. |
