Australian Forestry StandardIt seems that the long awaited outcome from the review of the Green Star Mat-8 Sustainable Timber credit will shortly be released. This review that has been ongoing since December 2007 has been completed and it would appear that it only needs the ratification of the GBCA board to get the necessary approval.

A joint media release from GBCA and the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) on Thursday 19th March gave this strong indication when they said that the Australian Forest Certification Scheme is an appropriate and fair way of continuing to ensure Green Star recognises the needs of the forest industry while achieving positive environmental outcomes.

The release went on to praise the efforts of the nine person Timber Expert Reference Panel saying that the panel had undertaken the review in a fair and transparent manner and that an announcement was only days away.

This will be very good news for the Australian timber producers as some 80% of all Australian timber is produced from AFS certified forests. It will also come as a relief to the architectural and building industries which at present are finding it difficulty to meet the rating requirements when using Australian timber.

TDA CEO Mr Andrew Dunn said this long awaited outcome will be very much welcomed by the local producers and should greatly assist all designers who are operating in the commercial market place.
