Sandra Behrendt, the new Event Coordinator for the Australian Timber Design Awards, has chosen sustainability to be the theme of this year's Awards. She aims to use the Awards to broaden awareness of the potential of timber design to meet sustainability goals.
With a strong background in sustainable architecture, Sandra is well suited to this task. She studied architecture in Germany and worked for HolzHausplus, a leader in zero energy construction. She has also worked as an architect in Sydney, and has a good understanding of the sustainability challenges peculiar to Australia. Sandra combines her architectural knowledge with a passion for timber design. She believes that timber is uniquely suited to sustainable design—and she sees this as one of timber's main competitive advantages. But it is her interest in the aesthetic and engineering potential of timber that brought her to the Awards. Getting to know our native timber species is one of the challenges of the competition that Sandra is most looking forward to. |
