With the many staff changes at TDA and TABMA over recent years it has become apparent that very few of the staff have actually been to a sawmill.
TDA CEO, Andrew Dunn, said “It is important that all levels of staff at TDA understand where the product comes from. We are at times the public face of the industry and need to answer questions from various quarters on behalf of the industry.”
Mr. Dunn went on to say “Although some of our people have visited Timber Merchant operations it’s hard to believe that most of the people we entrust management of the industry to, have not actually been to a manufacturing sawmill. This is very important in understanding the product and as such our site visits have been an essential staff development exercise.”
The mills inspected were the Highland Pine mill and the Carter Holt Harvey particleboard plant at Oberon. Many thanks go to Highland Pine and Carter Holt Harvey for allowing and assisting with the inspections.
During the visits, Mr. Dunn also admitted that he hadn’t been into a mill in NSW for some years – although on recent trips abroad he has been to mills in Canada, USA, Finland and New Zealand. He recounted that his most recent site visit was to the Parallelam plant in Richmond, Canada, whilst there for a timber conference in September. |
