Trans-Tasman Timber Design
Awards
The announcement of the inaugural Trans-Tasman Timber Design Awards closes off a wonderful year of Australian timber design. This competition celebrates the best in timber design within Australia and New Zealand – and extends the healthy sporting rivalry between our two nations into the field of timber building design.

In this, the first year of the Trans-Tasman Awards, three award categories were offered:
  • Residential;
  • Commercial;
  • Community.

Judges were drawn from the judging panels of the Australian and the New Zealand Timber Design Awards. They comprised Elvon Young and Ross Davison from New Zealand, and Kate St James, Richard Hough, Michael O’Donnell and Brian Hopper from Australia.

2010 Overall Winner :: David Boyle Architect :: Burridge Read Residence
The 2010 Australian Timber Design Awards grand prize has been awarded to David Boyle Architect for Burridge Read Residence. This project stood apart for its use of a variety of new and recycled timbers, hand-crafted timber joinery and various wood sculptural elements. Judges were particularly impressed by the manner in which timber was used to meld the house into the surrounding national park.

Choosing this year's winners proved unusually difficult, as the projects under consideration were, by general agreement, more diverse than in any previous year. Judges remarked on the widespread use of recycled timbers and on entrants' depth of knowledge of the aesthetic and structural properties of timber.

Winners were announced at the National ATDA Presentation Night on October 29 at Luna Park, Sydney. Major figures from government, the timber industry, and the design community were on hand to enjoy what has become the premier event in the timber design calendar.

Timber being exported
The Australian Government announced on 9th December that under legislation to be introduced in 2011 all companies – i.e. local producers and importers – making wood products available on the Australian market (that is importers and presumably domestic sawmills) will need to meet a due diligence test. This is to ensure that the timber they are sourcing has not been illegally logged (see this announcement from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry).

The legislation will apply to all forest products including sawn timber, wood panels, pulp, paper, wooden furniture and composite products.

Take advantage of our #1 Google ranking Print E-mail

The timber.net.au website
The timber.net.au website
Our timber.net.au website still holds the #1 spot for a Google Australia search on "timber" (relegating Wikipedia to second place). As a result, links from that website confer very considerable page rank benefits to a timber-related website. And with over 16,000 unique visitors per month to timber.net.au, you should at least consider listing your company on our Suppliers Guide, the most popular section of that website.

Standard plans start from as little as $240 pa (+GST) and display your logo, all contact details (with hyperlink and email) and 3 category classifications. Enhanced and Premium listings include further information about your company, such as products and services, and other business locations.

We also have pay-per-month and pay-per-click advertising available on both timber.net.au and the National Timber Product Stewardship Group website.

If you would like to know more please contact us.
