The world's tallest timber building under construction
As reported in our last Newsletter the World’s tallest modern timber residential building, in Hackney, north London, is a marvel of modern engineering comprising of 29 apartments in 9 floors and on completion will weigh an estimated 300 tonnes.

The Architect, Mr Andrew Waugh has been quoted as saying that the overall cost was much the same as that of a steel and concrete building however the owner recognised the cost of the overall project where extensive savings of time and on site charges made a significant difference.

In the original estimates 23 weeks were to be saved in the construction programme and in the structural process it took a team of 5, only 9 weeks to erect the main structure.

The concept design originated because of the City of London’s planning requirements regarding a 10% annual carbon reduction. This building with its timber carbon store of over 181 tonnes and a further saving of 125 tonnes of construction generated carbon has an equivalent annual offset of the 10% reduction equal to 210 years.

Mr Waugh has also stated that a testament to the acceptance of the building was that all the apartments where sold in 90 minutes. For more information, details, site, construction and completed photos, click here.
