Timber & Construction in Bushfire Prone Areas |

Unfortunately, bushfires are a fact of life in Australia as the recent tragedy in
Victoria has underscored.
In many parts of Australia, land will be assessed as being at a particular risk of bushfire
hazards using the Australian Standard AS 3959 (in NSW additional guidelines are used; Planning
for Bushfire Protection). AS 3959, which is referenced in the Building Code of Australia has,
among other requirements, requirements for different types of construction (and materials) depending
on the risk of bushfire.
The Standard has been under major revision since publication of the second edition in 1999. Due
to the recent bushfires in Victoria, the Standards committee members (from organisations such as
the fire services, fire testing agencies, the housing industry and timber associations) have recently
completed and published the third edition AS 3959-2009. |

It seems that the long awaited outcome from the review of the Green Star Mat-8 Sustainable Timber credit will shortly be released. This review that has been ongoing since December 2007 has been completed and it would appear that it only needs the ratification of the GBCA board to get the necessary approval.
A joint media release from GBCA and the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) on Thursday 19th March gave this strong indication when they said that the Australian Forest Certification Scheme is an appropriate and fair way of continuing to ensure Green Star recognises the needs of the forest industry while achieving positive environmental outcomes.

Australia's First National Carpenters' Day |
|
|
|
Thursday, 02 April 2009 00:00 |
April 21 will mark the first ever national day to celebrate the valuable work of
those in the carpentry trade.
National Carpenters’ Day, is one of the initiatives of the new timber industry marketing
campaign Wood. Naturally Better.
The day will celebrate not just the obvious work that carpenters do, but will also be
a great chance to educate carpenters and consumers about some of the lesser known benefits
of working and living with wood.
National Carpenters’ Day will serve as a timely reminder for why timber and timber products
remain the preferred choice for many building and design applications.
