New Board for TDA |
|
|
|
Monday, 21 December 2009 00:00 |
Following the Annual General Meeting in October, TDA is pleased to announce that it has only seen minor changes to the board that has currently been directing operations.
Long time director John Simon, who has been TDA chairman for two long terms in the last 10 years has relinquished the role but is keen to remain a board member. John handed over the reins to the former TABMA representative, Simon Olding for a short period about 3 years ago, but was happy to resume when Simon vacated his position.
Dave Angus from Boral Timber has taken on the position and has the full support of his fellow board members and the staff of TDA.

Record turnout for the 2009 Australian Timber Design Awards |

2009 Overall Winner :: Brian Hooper Architect & m3architecture (architects in association) :: Tree of Knowledge Memorial
The 2009 Australian Timber Design Awards grand prize has been awarded to Brian Hooper Architect & m3architecture (architects in association) for the Tree of Knowledge Memorial in Barcaldine, Queensland. The structure memorialises the tree under which, so legend has it, the Australian Labor Party was founded in 1891. It is made up of over 4913 individual timber members produced from recycled telegraph poles and verified by Timber Queensland against the new recycled timber standards. The memorial consists of a dead, preserved ghost gum tree at the heart of a square frame. Logs hang from the ceiling of the frame in imitation of the canopy of a tree; and charcoaled external timbers create
a "veil" around the dead tree.
Regional prizes were awarded at presentation nights in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney in October 2009. A highlight of the presentation nights were the expositions given by Andrew Waugh, Director of Waugh Thistleton Architects Ltd of London, the principal architect behind the Murray Grove Tower, the world's tallest modern timber residential building.

Thank you to our timber donors! |

Christmas came early here at the TDA when association members stood up to show their support for our office relocation – in timber.
Thanks to donations of timber from Boral Timber, Carter Holt Harvey, Hyne, CWC, ITI Australia, Moxon Timbers, and Timbeck Cedar Products, the refurbished TDA offices in St Leonards, Sydney, now serve as a showcase of the beauty and versatility of timber.
“To be honest, we were taken aback by the generous response of our members to our request for suitable timbers,” said TDA structural engineer Tony Walther, the designer of the TDA office fit-out. “It really made clear for me the support we have in the timber industry.”

Laurel Clarke – office manager retires |

Laurel Clarke at her retirement party
December 18th brings to an end the TDA career of Laurel Clarke who has been at the “sorting table” end of TDA for almost 18 years. Laurel has been the voice on the phone, the first point of contact for all those years and with her go thousands of personal contacts that will remember her happy, smiling voice.
With Laurel go almost the last links to the traveling roadshows, the Building Information Centre Showroom, the Advisory Service, and the NSW Timber Framing Manual. Laurel was our coordinator, the roster maker, the librarian, the go-to girl, and our contact man. When we were in the field pre-mobile phones, she was our lifeline.

Growing talent at TDA |

Monday, 21 December 2009 00:00 |
The latest TDA intern, Shirley Sun, a 3rd year Bachelor of Civil Engineering student at the University of Sydney, is demonstrating day by day here at the TDA offices the value of the TDA internship program.
Although Shirley has only been with us since early December, she has already established herself as an asset to the association. Shirley is assisting Tony Walther, our overworked structural engineer, with his investigations of the carbon storage capacities and thermal properties of Australian timber species. She is, moreover, cheerfully helping with all the minor tasks that keep the office running smoothly. This couldn’t have come at a better time: Laurel Clarke, our office manager, has just retired, and we are still settling into our new premises in St Leonards. Things are hectic – and Shirley’s help is very welcome!

Some examples from our portfolio of websites
If you’re running a business these days, you need to be online – and if you’re running a timber products business, there’s no better organisation to establish your online presence than TDA. We know timber and we know web design: we’ve got the datasheets and images your site needs, the expert advice that our bird’s-eye view of the timber industry affords – and we’ve got the contacts to push your search engine ranking towards that elusive number 1 spot.
Whether you need a basic corporate website (such as tdansw.asn.au), an attractive gallery site (see, for instance, timberawards.com.au) or a large information warehouse (such as timber.net.au), the TDA can get you there. All our sites are packaged with a content management system that allows you to add news, events, documents and images to your site yourself. We can provide a simple PayPal shopping cart or an extensive e-commerce solution. If you need an online newsletter, a slideshow or an image gallery, we can do that. Want to leverage the marketing potential of social networking? We can do that too. Whatever it is you need, talk to us. We can build it – and they will come.
